I was almost run off the highway by a semi

And yet I don’t think either of us were at fault.

I was just trying to merge on to the highway. I had matched speed with highway traffic. It was a two-lane highway and a one-lane merge. The semi truck was in the left lane as I was merging on to the highway. I was using my signal. As I was merging, the semi wanted to switch lanes. I was right next to the cab. All of a sudden, at 65MPH, I notice the semi approaching me rapidly. I couldn’t exactly drive ahead of the semi because there was a car ahead of me, conveniently driving slower than I need to be going.

Here’s the thing, I must’ve been in the semi’s bling spot, so it couldn’t have been entirely his fault. We both noticed each other at the same time. I panicked and swerved into the shoulder as the semi cancelled his lane change. I could feel my car at the limit of grip. Any more and I would have slid off the highway. It didn’t help that it’s a damp day.

Anyway, as I regained my composure, I powered past the semi and left that area altogether.

I can’t be too angry about it, since it was really neither of our faults. As I stated previously, the semi driver couldn’t see me, and there wasn’t really anything I could do to avoid merging next to it. I’m just glad my car and I are in one piece.

That’s scary. Yeah, sounds like one of them deals. Luckily you both took action in time.

I saw one of these the other day, but the you of that story kept on merging into the semi until it eventually forced the semi off the road and squeezed another car into the concrete barrier. at LEAST 4 cars got messed up by the one you (though not you) keep on keeping on into that truck. I had just passed the semi about 2 minutes earlier. So I guess what I’m saying is - Good job for not running into a semi, its ugly.

Sounds like that truck needs a mirror upgrade:

If I drove one of those for a living, that would be the FIRST mod.

Shit. Hopefully no one was hurt. I’m not sure how one can miss a semi truck in the window.

But who the hell thinks it’s a good idea to move right near an on ramp!?!

He should have known better.

me too, I think it was a Liberty that merged into the semi. For the life of me I can’t figure out why the semi didn’t just stand his ground and blow his horn but because he moved over he brought 2 more people into the scene.

Probably, but I’m trying not to throw blame around, it’s unhealthy. Recently I’ve noticed myself succumbing to road rage, and I’ve been trying to subdue that.

Hmph. Technically the semi’s fault, but nice job avoiding. He needs better mirrors/learn how to adjust his mirrors better. Something way too many drivers overlook - in a car you don’t need to see the side of your car, you need to see the lane next to you that you can’t see from your rearview mirrors. Most people have their mirrors pulled in way too tight. You can lean your head a little to see the side of your car if you need to look there.

This almost happened to me today too. There was a left-entering ramp and all the rush hour traffic coming in boxed me in with a truck to my right. Then suddenly I see the truck’s left turn signal turn on.

This. There’s a special place in driver hell for anyone who decides to to change lanes into the right in the immediate vicinity of an on-ramp. This goes doubly if they’re doing it to pass on the right.

I had a somewhat similar thing happen a few days ago, but the semi didn’t have a trailer. I was going around a sharp curve with the semi to my left and he came about a quarter into my lane. He wasn’t changing lanes, he was just a really shit driver. I took it as an opportunity to blow my horn and then floor it around the curve (wheeeeeeeeeeeee)

The semi blind spot thing is extremely exaggerated. I’m not a “truck driver”, but I do have a class A license and occasionally find myself behind the wheel of an 18-wheeled tractor trailer. It’s amazing how much you can really see from that driver seat. So, I’m going with: totally his fault.
